FAQs
What does MOD mean?
“MOD” is short for “modified”. The rules have been modified to fit the budding skill levels of our youngest players.
U5 have games only (no practices). U6 and U7 (ages 5 and 6) play two simultaneous games side-by-side. Corner kicks and build out lines are introduced in U8.
What does U5-18 mean?
“U” is short for “under”. 5 year olds play U6 (under 6), and so on.
What does Association mean?
Association teams play all over Seattle against teams from other neighborhood soccer clubs operating under SYSA (Seattle Youth Soccer Association). Association play begins at U10 (age 9).
What do UKIS, SYSA, and WYS mean?
UKIS (UK International Soccer) is our coaching partner with coaches from the UK leading clinics and additional practices for our U8-U11 teams.
SYSA (Seattle Youth Soccer Association) is our parent organization, which organizes our Association games and through which we gain field access and insurance.
WYS (Washington Youth Soccer) creates the overarching policies for playing soccer in Washington state.
How can I tell if my child is already registered?
Login to your Demosphere member account and click on "past registrations". You will see which of your children are registered and their team assignment (if already determined).
Can my child play on their friend’s team?
MOD: The only way to guarantee a teammate in U5-U9 divisions is for parents to coach together.
Association: Players are assigned to teams based on roster availability.
Can my child play up – i.e. play on a team of older players?
Yes, playing up is generally accepted by the club for MOD teams. This request does not require special circumstances or a letter from the family. The club will decide team allocations. To submit a request to play up, contact our Registrar.
Can my child play down – i.e. play on a team of younger players?
MOD (U5 – U9) Yes, based on recommendations of the coaches, space availability on a team, and parents’ acquiescence. The MOD League is administered by Magnolia Soccer Club which allows us flexibility. The family must submit a written request to our Registrar before June 15 of the current registration season.
Association (U10 – U19) Only for medical conditions. A request for a child to play down may be submitted to SYSA and requires a letter from the parents, a supporting letter from Magnolia Soccer Club, and a letter from a doctor. The decision will be made by the SYSA Board of Commissioners. You can start this request by contacting our Registrar.
Do I really need to submit a birth certificate?
Yes, the Club keeps all birth certificates on file should we need to submit proof to the Seattle Youth Soccer Association or the Washington State League. You only need to provide one copy, one time. If you do not have a copy of a birth certificate, a passport or other official document will be accepted.
What equipment does my soccer player need?
All players need soccer cleats (not baseball shoes) and shin guards. We also recommend soccer socks and a full water bottle for each practice and game. A team jersey, which the player can keep, will be provided.
When will my child’s team practice?
Practice times are chosen by the coach(es) and based on field availability. We cannot accommodate moving players to a different team if they're not available for their assigned practice time. If your child cannot attend practices, they can still play in games.
I’m a coach but I’m going to be absent for a practice/game.
All practices and games must have an adult present that has completed SafeSport and had a background check through SYSA.
We recommend at least three parents on each team be background checked and SafeSport certified.
Where does the money from the registration fee go?
Magnolia Soccer Club is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. All of the money goes to running our programs. We pay for insurance for each player, field fees to Parks & Rec, equipment for teams and games, and more. Most importantly, we provide scholarships to those in financial need so that every child who wants to play soccer can.
Does MSC run Spring Soccer?
During the spring, some of our teams enter in the Seattle Spring Soccer League: an informal, small-sided league for U6 and up. This is not run by MSC. Visit our Spring page for more detail.
What is SYSA's inclement weather policy?
We play in sun, rain, wind, snow, and mud!
Games will be cancelled by SYSA in the event of lightning or if the AQI goes to 150+ per airnow.gov.
MOD coaches can choose to cancel games due to weather, but must coordinate with their opposing coach AND cancel their scheduled referee. Games cannot be officially "made up" but coaches can scrimmage during a pre-scheduled practice time.
Association coaches that choose not to play due to weather will forfeit their game, which will impact their standing in the league.
