Introduction

Welcome to Magnolia Soccer Club (MSC). MSC is a recreational youth league, volunteer-operated, serving players in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. We are a member of the Seattle Youth Soccer Association and conform with the schedules and regulations of this organization.



Each year more and more kids from Magnolia are playing soccer for MSC. Youth are starting to play soccer at younger ages and are staying with the Club into their teen years. As a result, the skill level of our teams continues to increase, even at very early ages. This early skills development is greatly benefiting those players who aspire to play on competitive teams in middle and high school.

Dates of the Season

Generally, the soccer season runs from early September through November with most Association teams competing in the Seattle City Tournament into December.

Coaches

Our coaches are volunteers from the community. Parents and former soccer players take great pride in working with their teams. In addition to personal experience, coaches are required to attend coaches training in order to receive differing levels of coaching licenses.

Additionally, our Coaching and Skills Development Directors have developed an extensive handbook for coaches which outlines goals and expectations, soccer drills, and team management. MSC ensures that our coaches are well-equipped to provide our players with a solid foundation in soccer skills and team development.

Scholarships

The Magnolia Soccer Club is committed to providing opportunities for children to play recreational soccer. Scholarships are available through the Magnolia Soccer Development Fund. Those players in need of scholarships should submit a letter of need to the president of the Magnolia Soccer Club stating their case. Applications will be reviewed as needed on a case by case basis.

Ages for Soccer

The age by all affiliates of US soccer is that of the player as of July 31 of the current year.

Teams and ages are referred to as U (under) an age. For example 10 year olds play on U11 teams.

MOD SOCCER

• Age 5 - 8 as of July 31 of the current year

Mod Soccer means modified soccer. The teams are smaller (4-6 per side), and the fields on which they play are also smaller. It is a developmental soccer program for younger players. Teams compete against other Magnolia teams where the emphasis of the game is on skills development. Scores are not kept and there are no standings. Players will receive a shirt which they can keep at the end of the season. Shorts, soccer cleats, and a ball must be provided by each player.

MOD REFEREE PROGRAM

The Mod Ref Program allows players ages 9 and older to assist our Club by refereeing our Mod Soccer games. It is a means for players to develop their leadership skills and their understanding of the game. They also enjoy the opportunity to teach our younger players the game they have come to enjoy. Many go on to become assistant coaches or association referees as they grow older.

ASSOCIATION SOCCER

Association soccer is recreational soccer - player selection for teams may not be based on ability or by any tryout process. The Association is Seattle Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) which consists of 14 neighborhood clubs and an advanced program called Emerald City Football Club. Within each age group older than U10, there are three divisions: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The coaches and the SYSA registrars determine the division level for each team. Teams stay together year to year and may move up or down a division each season.

Fall Soccer

During the winter, many of our players choose to participate on indoor soccer teams. While we do not formally organize teams for indoor soccer, we do refer players to various teams in the area.

Spring Soccer

During the spring, some of our teams enter in the Seattle Spring Soccer League: an informal, small-sided league for ages U9-U18. See Spring Soccer on the SYSA website - http://www.sysa.org/SpringSoccer
